About Southend Moose

How Moose Began:
A Journey Through Its Origins
Moose was founded in America in 1888 by Dr. John Wilson. Initially, it started as a men’s-only organization, focused on social connection, and was restructured in 1906 to emphasize mutual support. The name "Moose" was chosen because of how moose herds care for their vulnerable members, a symbol of the organization's commitment to looking after each other and helping those in need. Since its founding, Moose has been about creating strong bonds within the community and supporting others.
Moose’s Growth:
From the America to the UK
Moose quickly expanded internationally, with the first UK lodge opening in Tredegar, South Wales, in 1926, the hometown of James J. Davies, a key figure in the organization's history. Today, Moose includes both men and women working together in leadership roles. Moose International of Great Britain focuses on family, friendship, and charity. Members enjoy social events and support various causes, living by the motto of "fun with a purpose".
